So what winter jobs have you got to do??

So what winter jobs have we all got lined up? well not me actually but my hubby!! since having my son he has lost his working partner!

The interior - Needs to be sanded down - previous owner has used Sadoline coloured varnish!! :? and also been watching too much 'Changing Rooms' by sticking beige vinyl all over the nice wood! some of it has been done very nicely and will probably stay but some of it looks hideous and is falling off and peeling edges!

She needs a good polish but will save that for the beginning of next year.

All the windows need taking out and resealing too - Fun!

Apart from the transom/mushroom pit (see other post), I have the bathroom to refit, new carpet to lay in the main saloon (it's white now, WHITE, on a boat?), a bilge blower to fit into the fuel tank recess to purge the vapours, modifications to the hood to prevent rainwater puddling in the middle, making the Eberspacher work reliably and consistently, so enough to stop me getting bored, but not enough to stop me getting into trouble!!!!!

The boat has just been lifted out this weekend. Being antifouled (£105 a tin :o ) and painted on hard to reach areas whilst the boat is in the water. The leg is being reconditioned so is the propellor then the leg is being painted and dropped back in next weekend.

Not sure i didn't hold the tin long enough to find out

It was at Selby Boat Yard. Is this a little over expensive?

If it is micron then that is probably the right price.
Are you doing it your self?
I used to quite enjoy antifouling the boat! laid on your back in the pouring rain one year under the boat. :D
Now we have 30ft of boat to do.. will probably come out next year for that.

adam
i take it you are talking about a grp boat.
down in norfolk lots of hire yards are now using TAR OIL as an anti foul.
obviously it is enviromently friendly easy to apply with a roller and finish with a brush
and most important it is cheaper than anti foul, about a quarter the price.
just do the water line with the good stuff and you have saved your self a lump of cash. :D

Never used anti foul myself
just a coat of cheap gloss paint on the wet bit
was nice and clean last time she came out after 4 years in :D

i am off to norfolk on saturday but just till the following day.

the object of the journey is to winterise the boat and to be prepared

for anything that the weather might throw at us.

i am picking a pal of mine up who also has a boat moored within a couple of miles

of mine, so we will do them both while we are there.

i have been doing this for 16 years now so it is no longer a problem, a fairly simple task.

There doesn't seem to be too long a list of winter jobs this year, however on the last couple of trips there was a bit more vibration than usual ..... although it's sometimes hard to tell with these old engines :) I see some grease has come from around the outside of the sterntube on our last trip up the Slea, so maybe it just needs the bolts holding it in to be tightened up a bit.

Just as with the off season with the stock car, mine or others, when there is not much to do you think 'Oh, I can have a rest now' then before you know it, spring is here and you are rushing with only a couple of weeks left. So more midnight oil needs to be burnt

I've only had to do it half a dozen times, but the spring cleanup does seem to becoming a bit of a chore. Thankfully, as long as I go and light the stove, it does seem to have stopped the 'big cleanup' to some extent.

For anyone who does want a winter project, well someone has shown interest in one of Roy's old boats, and the 22 Dawncraft he has, he says he will sell for £300. This was a good boat only a few years ago, which he bought and cleaned up, when the owners wife became ill. The new owner neglected it, the hard top rear blew away, and the sheet slipped letting water in. So it's had some rainwater in and been abandoned.

Anyway, if someone fancies a bit of work, it could? be a good boat again. Many sold for a couple of thousand are then found to need just as much work.

Well, got the Eberspacher to go properly, problem was due to the cables being too long (causing too great a voltage drop), so a reduction of 15ft cured that.
Bought 4square metres of solid oak flooring in the sales to replace the WHITE carpeting in the saloon, so that should be an interesting job as long as I remember NOT to nail it down!

Amazing what you find once you start uncovering things when getting to grips with jobs!!

Ripped the carpet out ready for prepping the floor to put the oak flooring in, and saw an electrical 'thing' under the fridge through the air vent.
Took the fridge out and found a device, which turns out to be a mains priority power supply for the 12v fridge when connected to the mains. A bit superfluous now I have a Sterling International 1220 charger!!

Also, through the hole where the table spigot base goes, I could see a load of rust!! That turned out to be a shed-load of pig-iron ballast, about 2-3 cwt of it!!

Fridge out and power supply thingy exposed. Note pig-iron ballast glassed in to the hull!!

Ballast in the hole under the floor.

The edge beading took all the time up, had to make my own molding due to the strange curves everywhere!!
